Importance of Roof Insullation
If you live in a home that doesn’t have an insulated roof or has a poorly insulated roof, then you have probably noticed that your home is freezing in the winter and hot in the summer. And that you spend a fortune on heating and cooling bills to keep your space at a comfortable temperature.
If this is the case, then it is time to get your roof insulated or fix the old insulation. Having a well insulated home will make a huge difference to the temperature in your house. Good insulation will ensure that your home is a comfortable temperature throughout all seasons. This means that you won’t be spending nearly as much on heating and cooling bills throughout the year because you won’t need to use the heater or air conditioner as often. Rather than adjusting the thermostat every few minutes and either shedding or gaining clothes, you can relax in your home and be comfortable year round.
Roof insulation is important because it keeps the cool and warm air from entering or leaving your home. If it is hot outside, insulation will keep hot air out and cool air in. If it is cold outside, insulation will keep cold air out and warm air in. This is what helps to regulate the temperature inside your home and keep you comfortable year round.
Lots of older houses do have wall installation, which will help regulate the air a little bit, but many old houses do not have roof insulation. Newer houses typically do have roof insulation, but not all. Whether your house is old or new, you should check the insulation in your roof and make sure you have some or see if it should be replaced. If your roof has had leaks in the past, then it is possible that your insulation has become moldy, mildewy, or is falling apart. This process can also just happen over time, so you should get it checked every few years. If this is the case, then you will want to install new roof installation as soon as possible.
To some people, all insulation looks the same. If you have no idea what you are looking for or how to tell whether your insulation is past its prime, then you can call a roofing contractor or insulation company to come inspect your insulation for you. This will ensure that your insulation is correctly inspected and you will know for sure whether or not you need to start considering a replacement.
Here are some of the types of insulation you can choose to use:
Blanket rolls are long rolls of insulation that are pre-cut to fit between joists or studs. Blanket rolls typically run between 20 and 40 feet and are easy to unroll and install.
Loose fill insulation is basically a bunch of small, loose pieces of insulation that will need to be blown into place with specific equipment. This insulation works well in small attic spaces where there may not be enough room to work or move around very well. Whoever is installing the insulation can just stand at the entrance and blow the insulation into place. This process does take some experience and specific techniques, so it’s best to hire a professional for this one.
Batts are pre cut sections of insulation and can just be picked up and placed between joists or studs, making them easy to install.
Foam boards of insulation are just rigid panels that help insulate your home. They aren’t soft like the other types of insulation, but will still get the job done.
Spray foam is a type of insulation that is sprayed from a can. This type won’t work to cover large areas that need insulated, such as an entire attic or wall, but it does work well to fill in small gaps or cracks and to insulate around doors, vents, and windows.
Once you have chosen the type of insulation that will be best for your home, you can move onto installing it. There are two different ways you can insulate your home from above.
Place insulation on the attic floor between the joists
Place insulation beneath the roof rafters
The first way, placing the insulation material on the attic floor between the joists, can be done on your own, depending on the type of insulation you are using. It shouldn’t be very difficult if you are using blanket insulation. Blanket insulation will come in rolls and can just be rolled out between the joists. Make sure that you get the correct width and depth of insulation, or that you are able to cut it to the correct width. However, if you are doing it this way but using loose fill insulation, you will need to hire some help.
The second way, placing insulation beneath the roof rafters, is best for if you plan to turn your attic into a living space. If you are ever going to finish your attic and spend time up there, you won’t want the insulation to be on the floor of the attic, because then the attic space will be very cold in the winter, since only beneath that space is insulated.
While you can install some types of insulation on your own, like blanket rolls, it may be best to hire a professional. More difficult kinds of insulation, like loose fill, require special tools and expertise to do the job right.
You don’t want to try to install insulation on your own and mess up. If you install the insulation wrong, your home still won’t be properly insulated and you won’t get the full benefit of having an insulated home. It’s important that the insulation is installed correctly and efficiently. When hiring a contractor, Spilman Inc is just the company for you!
