Roof and Leak Repair

If your home’s roof is leaking, then you need to get it fixed right away. A leak can cause substantial damage to your roof and your home. The longer you let a leak go without repairing it, the more expensive and difficult it will be to repair it.

Sometimes it’s obvious that your roof is leaking. If you see dark stains on your ceiling or find water dripping from it, then you clearly have a leak. Finding stains or leaks probably means that the problem has been going on for some time. You may not be able to see physical signs of a leak until damage has already been done and the problem has been ongoing.

Finding these physical signs means that you need to take swift action and stop the leak before the problem gets any bigger. Hopefully, you catch the problem in time to avoid significant damage.

The ideal situation, of course, would be to find and stop potential leaks before they happen. In order to do this, you should have your roof inspected at least once a year, if not more. Having a professional roofer inspect your roof will bring any potential issues to light and help you avoid leaks in your home.

What causes roof leaks?

There are lots of reasons your roof may get a leak. Extreme weather can damage shingles or boards on your roof and cause a leak. Rotting or molding shingles, boards, or siding can make way for water to enter your home. Cracked or damaged flashing is another thing that may be causing your roof to leak. Animals can sometimes chew their way through shingles and roofing material. When you have your roof inspected, the professional knows what to look for and can make sure that nothing is amiss on your roof.

Another reason your roof may be leaking is that your gutters are clogged. Gutters are meant to direct water through the system and away from your home. When they are unable to do this because of twigs, leaves, or debris, then the water isn’t able to go anywhere. The water then pools and is more likely to seep through the cracks. To fix this problem, you can either have a professional clear out your gutters for you or you can clear them out yourself. All you should need to clean out your gutters are a ladder, bag or tarp, and a tool to get the debris out with (maybe just your hands).

How can roof leaks be repaired?

The type of repair your roof will need depends on the type and intensity of the leak. If you catch a leak early on when minimal damage has been done, the repair may be as simple as replacing some shingles or boards. If the leak in your roof has been ongoing for a while and causing damage not visible from the roof or ground, then the repairs can get pretty costly very fast.

Water underneath your roof or in your attic space can cause a lot of damage. This will allow mold and mildew to grow, wood to rot, and can even damage your insulation. If the problem is severe enough, you may be required to replace your entire roof and parts of your attic area in order to solve the problem. Roof replacements are very expensive, so you should have a good incentive to stay on top of your roof leaks and get your roof inspected.

Can I fix a roof leak myself?

It depends on what is causing the roof to leak.

If the problem is simply that a few shingles are missing and this is letting water in your home, then yes, you can just nail in some new shingles. If the problems with your roof are big or taking place beneath what you can see, then you will probably have to call a professional.

Sometimes the problem isn’t because of the weather or because of any external sources. Sometimes the problem is with the roof itself. If your roof was installed incorrectly, then, later on, you’re bound to experience problems. An example of this is if the valleys of your roof weren’t properly sealed. Fixing this problem will definitely require a professional’s help since the repair will be so complicated. If your roof wasn’t installed by a professional and is now experiencing problems, then you should just invest in professional help now and avoid more problems in the future.

If you decide to make any repairs yourself, always make sure that you’re following correct safety procedures and not taking any unnecessary risks. Moving around on your roof can be dangerous. So can climbing up and down a ladder. If you aren’t comfortable with heights or don’t trust yourself not to fall, make sure to call a professional and not take the risk. Falling from a roof can result in serious injury and a trip to the emergency room. When working on your roof, always have a buddy and be careful. Repairing your roof is never as important as your safety.

Roof Tile Repair and Replacement

Your roof is an essential part of your home. Without a properly working roof, you, your family and your possessions will be exposed to the elements.

If your roof is in need of repairs, then you need to get them taken care of right away. The sooner your roof is fixed, the safer you and your loved ones will be.

A common problem with roofs and one that requires repairs is missing, warped, broken or loose tiles. Whether your roof is made of asphalt shingles, clay tiles, concrete tiles, or any of the numerous other roofing materials, missing, warped, broken, or loose tiles need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Without climbing up onto your roof it can be difficult to tell whether your roof is in need of some new tiles or not. Some signs that you should closely inspect your roof include seeing warped or missing tiles, finding tiles on the ground, or having a leak in your home.

Missing, warped, broken, or loose tiles can cause leaks in your home. Because the tiles are not doing their job properly, water is able to find its way inside your house, where it can do a lot of damage. Water can damage your ceilings, walls, and attic area. If enough water gets through, mold and mildew can grow, making your house unsafe to live in. Any sign of water damage should be taken seriously and swift action should take place. While there are other reasons your home may have a leak, if you see one, you should have your roof inspected right away to determine if that is the problem.

Any time you see a problem yourself or suspect that there might be a problem, you should have a roofing company come and inspect your roof. If you live in North Carolina, then the roofing company you should call is Spilman Inc.

Spilman Inc is a highly experienced roofing contractor. With more than 25 years of experience, Spilman Inc is more than qualified to come and inspect your home. If we find any problems, we can fix them quickly and affordably. Our goal is to make the process as easy for you as possible.

If your roof is missing tiles or has damaged tiles, then you need to have them replaced. Some simple problems, like a few asphalt shingles here and there, you can replace yourself. If there are more than a few tiles missing or the type of tile on your roof is difficult to replace, then you should call a professional like Spilman Inc.

Climbing on your roof can be dangerous. Roofs can be slippery, especially if your roof is steep. If you decide to do repairs yourself, make sure that you are using a sturdy ladder and that it is secured safely on the ground, preferably with somebody holding it in place just in case it starts to slip. While on your roof, be careful and don’t move too quickly. One slip up can result in a fall, which can then result in an emergency hospital visit.  If you don’t have a good head for heights or aren’t comfortable on your roof, then you should definitely leave any repairs to the professionals.

If you are replacing roof tiles yourself, then make sure that you know what you’re doing. If you replace a tile incorrectly or end up using the wrong kind of tile, you can do more damage than good. Ill-fitting tiles won’t keep water out as well as they should, and different types of tiles work differently, so replacing a tile with the wrong type, even if they look similar, is a bad idea. If you have any questions about how to replace a roof tile or what type of tile to buy, call Spilman Inc or a local hardware store with your questions. We would be happy to answer any questions you have and give you some tips.

Unfortunately, roof tiles don’t last forever. Eventually, you will need to replace all of your roof tiles. Maybe you replace only a few a year as the weather damages just a few at a time. Or maybe you get an entire roof replacement and get all new tiles at once. Whatever the case, getting new tiles is unavoidable.

The type of tile your roof has determines how long they will last and how often you will have to replace them. Some tiles last longer than others and some tiles go through bad weather better than others. When choosing tiles for your home (if building a new home or replacing your whole roof), do your research and make sure to get high-quality roof tiles that you can afford. The better tiles you get now, the less likely you are to have to replace them and the less money you will spend on repairs. If you didn’t build your house and have moved into what was originally someone else’s, then you have no say in the type of tiles and will just have to deal the best you can with what you’ve been given.

If your roof tiles are damaged, or any other part of your roof is in need of repairs, then call Spilman Inc. As a fully licensed roofing company, you will be in good hands when you choose Spilman. Even better, Spilman doesn’t stop at just roofs. Spilman also does siding replacement, kitchen and bathroom renovations, room additions, basement finishing, and painting, among other things. Slate Roofing

If you’re looking to build a home or replace your current roof, then you should be aware of all your options. There are dozens of roofing materials you can choose from, including asphalt, concrete, metal, and slate. Most homeowners tend to opt for asphalt roofing because of its cheap price and nice appearance. As a homeowner, though, you should definitely look at more options before deciding on the material you’ll be placing on your roof.

An awesome roofing material that not all homeowners know to look at is slate. Slate tiles are tiles made from natural stone. Once you’ve learned more about slate tiles and why they’re so often used for roofing, you may find yourself questioning the ‘safe’ choice of an asphalt roof.

Here are some of the pros and cons of slate roofing.

Pros:

  • Appearance
  • Durability
  • Fireproof
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Can be recycled

Cons:

  • Price
  • Weight
  • Need to find a specialized roofing company
  • Complications when walking on it
  • May be difficult to find replacements

Here are some more specifics about each of the points listed above.

Pros:

Appearance

Slate roofs are beautiful, simple as that. When you decide to install slate tiles on your roof, you know your house will look amazing for years to come. Slate tiles come in a variety of subtle colors, depending on the natural stone the slate has been cut from. Because of this, your roof won’t look like anyone else’s. Yours will be a very unique roof that will have your friends and family complimenting it all the time. If you want a roof that will stand out and look amazing, then slate is the way to go. If appearance is your main concern, then you can’t go wrong with slate tiles.

Durability

Slate tiles are very durable. Slate tiles have even been known to outlast the house they’re placed on. If treated right and not damaged by severe weather, slate tiles can last for up to 150 years. That’s a lot longer than almost any other roofing material you can choose to install on your home. If not damaged, your slate roof will last a very long time with no need for replacement. Asphalt roofs need to be entirely replaced every 20 to 30 years and individuals or patches of shingles need to be replaced anytime there’s a problem or they’re torn off by the weather. Compared to that, slate tiles are an amazing investment. Once they’re installed, so long as they aren’t damaged, they won’t need to be replaced.

Fireproof

Slate is fireproof. When you have fireproof materials on your roof, your home is better able to withstand fire and less likely to catch on fire. A big cause of home fires is something burning to fall on the roof, like fireworks. If a firework falls on your slate roof, you’ll have nothing to worry about. Keep in mind that slate roofs won’t protect you from a fire that starts inside your home, so don’t put all your trust in a slate roof keeping the fire away, since it can’t do anything about fires that come from beneath it.

Environmentally friendly

Slate is cut from natural stone, which means that a minimum amount of toxic chemicals are being put into the air while they’re being cut. If helping the environment is important to you, then having a slate roof is a perfect option. It may be one of the most environmentally friendly roofing materials out there.

Can be recycled

Not only do slate tiles help the environment while being produced, but they can also help the environment once they’re purpose has been served. When a home with slate tiles is destroyed or when the homeowners decided to put a new roof on for various reasons, those slate tiles can then be recycled. Lots of people like to recycle everything they can, and if you have a slate roof, someday you can do the same.

Cons:

Price

A drawback of slate roofing is that it’s expensive. Because it’s a natural stone and takes specialized skills to install, slate tiles are quite a bit more expensive than other roofing materials. Keep in mind that your slate roof will last longer than other roofs and won’t need to be replaced or maintained as much as others do. This means that you’re likely to have only the one-time payment rather than having to dish out more money every few years because your roof is experiencing problems and needs repairs.

Weight

Slate is heavy. This makes sense because its a natural stone, and stone is heavy. Because slate is heavy, not every home is built structurally well enough to support it. You will need to have your home inspected before deciding to install slate tiles. Once your home is cleared, a special backing can be put onto your roof to help your roof easily support the extra weight.

Need to find a specialized roofing company

Slate can be difficult to install. There is a very specialized method for installing slate tiles and you’ll need to find a roofing company that has experience in this area. Not all roofing companies are experts in slate installation. Once you’ve found a company, though, you’ll be good to go. You won’t want to try installing slate tiles yourself, because of the skills and techniques required. You’re more likely to end up harming your slate tiles than installing them correctly. With slate tiles, always turn to a professional.

Complications when walking on it

Because slate tiles are heavy and made of stone, they tend to crack and break when walking on them. If you know the correct way to walk on them, then it can be done safely without ruining your beautiful slate tiles. Professional roofers will know how to walk on slate. This means that if you ever need to do work on your roof, you should call a professional roofer to help you out so your slate tiles stay safe.

May be difficult to find replacements

Because slate is so unique and the colors differ from batch to batch, it may be difficult to find replacement tiles if you ever need to. If your slate is broken by someone walking on it or by severe weather and you need to replace only a few tiles, you may end up with a different colored patch on your roof. This is because it may be hard to find a tile of the same color.

Now that you know some of the pros and cons of slate tiles for your roof, give Spilman Inc a call today. If you have any questions or already know that you want slate tiles on your roof, Spilman Inc is the company for you. With over 25 years of slate roofing experience, Spilman is qualified to help you with your project today.

Gutter Repair

Most homeowners know that their roof is an essential part of their home and that it keeps them safe. Because of this, many homeowners are on the watch for broken tiles, leaking roofs, and damaged shingles. However, many homeowners forget the importance of their home’s gutters.

Gutters are a very important part of your home. Gutters direct water away from the base of your house and away from the siding, which keeps your foundation dry and keeps your home properly supported.

If you haven’t paid attention to your gutters lately, then it’s time for you to get them inspected. Or if you’ve noticed any problems with your gutters, then you need to call Spilman Inc. Your gutters may need repairs if you’ve noticed any staining on the siding of your house if your gutters overflow when it rains, if your gutters are sagging, or if sections of your gutters are missing. There are other problems too that means you should get your gutters fixed, but these are some of the common ones.

If your gutters are only missing a nail or two, then repairing them will be easy. Just grab a hammer, nail, and a ladder and you should be good to go. If your gutter needs a more serious repair or you aren’t comfortable on a ladder, then give Spilman Inc a call and we will come to repair your gutters for you. We pride ourselves on fast, affordable service, so once you’ve found a problem and given us a call, your gutters will be fixed without delay!

It may be time to replace your gutters entirely if the issue is bad enough. If your whole gutter system is about to come crashing down or if it’s all covered in rust or is cracking, then you will need to completely replace your gutters in order for them to properly protect your home. Replacing a gutter system can be hard work. If installed improperly, you may end up with more problems than you had to begin with. Improperly installed gutters can not only damage your roof (possibly resulting in costly repairs), but they won’t do their intended job, which is directing water away from your foundation. By directing water from your foundation and basement, gutters protect your home from water, leaks, flooding, mold, and eventual collapse. You should always have your gutters replaced by a professional like Spilman Inc.

If you live in an area where there is a lot of moisture or rain and your home is not on a slope that helps natural drainage occur, then it is especially important that you keep your gutters clean and well maintained. Even if you live in a dryer environment and your home’s position naturally drains water away, it’s still a good idea to have and maintain gutters.

Depending on the material of gutters you have, over time they will naturally chip and lose their paint. This can mess with the overall look of your home because they won’t be very attractive. Peeling and chipped paint never looks good, especially in an area that is visible on the outside of your home. Once your gutters start to peel, you can repaint them to make sure they look nice year-round and don’t detract from the curb value of your home. This is part of maintaining your gutters.

Maintaining your gutters can take quite a bit of work, depending on how much weather damage they get. Throughout the year, your gutters will naturally fill up with leaves, twigs, and other odds and ends. This is especially true if you have large trees near your home. These leaves and twigs can clog and block your gutters so that when it rains, rather than directing water down the spout and away from your house, your gutters will just overflow and water will spill over the sides. This isn’t good. This water will then pool near the base of your home, potentially causing significant damage to your foundation and possibly flooding your basement. Luckily, there are ways to avoid this problem.

To avoid this problem, you will need to periodically check your gutters for debris. If you find debris in your gutters, then you will need to clean them out. Cleaning out your gutters is fairly simple if you have a good head for heights. All you will need is a ladder, a bag, some gloves, and a rake or pole or something to pick up the debris (if you’re squeamish about using your hands). When climbing up a ladder, always make sure that it is safely secured and steady. It is best if you have somebody beneath you holding the ladder in place, just in case. A fall from a ladder can end in serious injury and maybe a trip to the hospital. Always make sure that you’re following correct safety procedures.

If you don’t want to clear out your own gutters or you’re afraid of heights, then call Spilman Inc. We would love to come to your home and clear out your gutters for you. With fast, easy, affordable service, you’ll be happy you gave us a call.

Whether your gutters need inspected, cleaned, fixed, or completely replaced, Spilman Inc is the company to call. As a licensed, highly qualified roofing company, we’re more than able to take care of anything you need.

Siding Installation & Replacement

Let us install new James Hardie® plank, cedar, or vinyl siding on your home or business. To complete your entire exterior, we also install new energy-efficient windows, doors and trim, fascia, and soffits.

If you are building a home or looking to update your existing home, then one way to help your house look beautiful is by installing beautiful siding.

Siding makes your home look nice, helping curb appeal, and may also increase your home’s overall value. This means that if you ever decide to sell your home, having nice siding will help you get more money for it and may help it sell quicker.

If your home is older or has been exposed to a lot of extreme elements, it may be time to get new siding. Some signs that you should get new siding to include:

  • Rot
  • Cracks or gaps
  • Bulging or warped panels
  • Mold
  • Moisture build-up

Sometimes it is less obvious that you need new siding. Since siding protects your home from the weather, if your siding isn’t doing its job, then your home may suffer. Another way to tell if you need new siding is if your heating or cooling bills have gone up or if you feel a draft while in your home. If air is getting through your siding and into your home, that will cause the temperature to fluctuate and make it more difficult to stay comfortable in your home. This may cause your bills to rise, which is never something you want to happen.

Once you decide to get new siding, you can start the process of looking at different kinds and choosing which will be best for you and your home. You will also need to find a company to install your siding for you.

There are lots of different kinds of siding you can choose from. The material you choose will help to determine how expensive this project will be. Here are some of the common siding materials you can choose from:

Vinyl siding:

Vinyl siding is the most common type of siding. It is one of the cheapest and looks nice, so many homeowners choose this when replacing their siding. Vinyl is lightweight but still fairly durable. Vinyl comes in lots of different colors, so you can choose the color you like most. Vinyl siding doesn’t take very much maintenance, needing only a good power washing every once in a while. If you choose to install vinyl siding on your home, you won’t regret it.

Wood siding:

There are lots of different wood siding types. There is cedar, pine, fir, spruce, and redwood, among others. Each type of wood will have different pros and cons. Here is a quick overview of the mentioned types of wood siding:

  • Cedar- Cedar siding is durable and with the proper finish will last you for decades.  Cedar is beautiful and will definitely make your home look lovely year-round. It’s also a good insulator.
  • Pine- Pine is one of the cheaper types of wood siding.
  • Spruce- Spruce is another of the cheaper types of wood siding and is very comparable to pine wood siding.
  • Redwood- Redwood siding is good at resisting warping and keeps its shape very well. Redwood is naturally insect resistant and requires less maintenance than other types of wood siding.

The problem with wood siding is that it is not fireproof unless specifically treated for such. If you choose to use wood siding on your home, then you should definitely make sure to use a fireproof finish. Wood siding does typically require a lot of maintenance since it will need to be repainted or refinished every couple of years or even more often than that.

Aluminum siding:

Aluminum siding is durable and easy to install. Because aluminum is a type of metal, it is fire resistant as well as mold resistant. Aluminum is energy efficient and is a great insulator, which will help your home stay at a good temperature year-round. Aluminum is also one of the cheapest siding materials, so it will be kind on your budget. The downside of aluminum siding is that it is easy to dent and may make a lot of noise when it rains. The only maintenance your aluminum siding should need is to be rinsed off or sprayed every once in a while.

Once you have chosen material for your siding, or even before, you will need to find a company to install it on your home.

If you live in North Carolina, then the best company for you is Spilman Inc. Spilman Inc has been in the roofing and home business for more than 25 years and is fully qualified to take on your home’s siding project.

When it comes to the outside of your home, Spilman does a lot more than just siding replacement and installation. Spilman is primarily a roofing company. If you need your roof repaired or replaced, Spilman is the company to call.

With new siding, you may want to update other features of your home to make the look go together. You can put in new windows and doors to help your home stand out. On a practical side, you can also install new fascia and soffits to help the airflow to your attic and to add to the value of your home. Importance of Roof Insullation

If you live in a home that doesn’t have an insulated roof or has a poorly insulated roof, then you have probably noticed that your home is freezing in the winter and hot in the summer. And that you spend a fortune on heating and cooling bills to keep your space at a comfortable temperature.

If this is the case, then it is time to get your roof insulated or fix the old insulation. Having a well insulated home will make a huge difference to the temperature in your house. Good insulation will ensure that your home is a comfortable temperature throughout all seasons. This means that you won’t be spending nearly as much on heating and cooling bills throughout the year because you won’t need to use the heater or air conditioner as often. Rather than adjusting the thermostat every few minutes and either shedding or gaining clothes, you can relax in your home and be comfortable year round.

Roof insulation is important because it keeps the cool and warm air from entering or leaving your home. If it is hot outside, insulation will keep hot air out and cool air in. If it is cold outside, insulation will keep cold air out and warm air in. This is what helps to regulate the temperature inside your home and keep you comfortable year round.

Lots of older houses do have wall installation, which will help regulate the air a little bit, but many old houses do not have roof insulation. Newer houses typically do have roof insulation, but not all. Whether your house is old or new, you should check the insulation in your roof and make sure you have some or see if it should be replaced. If your roof has had leaks in the past, then it is possible that your insulation has become moldy, mildewy, or is falling apart. This process can also just happen over time, so you should get it checked every few years. If this is the case, then you will want to install new roof installation as soon as possible.

To some people, all insulation looks the same. If you have no idea what you are looking for or how to tell whether your insulation is past its prime, then you can call a roofing contractor or insulation company to come inspect your insulation for you. This will ensure that your insulation is correctly inspected and you will know for sure whether or not you need to start considering a replacement.

Here are some of the types of insulation you can choose to use:

  • Blanket rolls
  • Loose fill
  • Batts
  • Foam board
  • Spray foam

Blanket rolls are long rolls of insulation that are pre-cut to fit between joists or studs. Blanket rolls typically run between 20 and 40 feet and are easy to unroll and install.

Loose fill insulation is basically a bunch of small, loose pieces of insulation that will need to be blown into place with specific equipment. This insulation works well in small attic spaces where there may not be enough room to work or move around very well. Whoever is installing the insulation can just stand at the entrance and blow the insulation into place. This process does take some experience and specific techniques, so it’s best to hire a professional for this one.

Batts are pre cut sections of insulation and can just be picked up and placed between joists or studs, making them easy to install.

Foam boards of insulation are just rigid panels that help insulate your home. They aren’t soft like the other types of insulation, but will still get the job done.

Spray foam is a type of insulation that is sprayed from a can. This type won’t work to cover large areas that need insulated, such as an entire attic or wall, but it does work well to fill in small gaps or cracks and to insulate around doors, vents, and windows.

Once you have chosen the type of insulation that will be best for your home, you can move onto installing it. There are two different ways you can insulate your home from above.

  1. Place insulation on the attic floor between the joists
  2. Place insulation beneath the roof rafters

The first way, placing the insulation material on the attic floor between the joists, can be done on your own, depending on the type of insulation you are using. It shouldn’t be very difficult if you are using blanket insulation. Blanket insulation will come in rolls and can just be rolled out between the joists. Make sure that you get  the correct width and depth of insulation, or that you are able to cut it to the correct width. However, if you are doing it this way but using loose fill insulation, you will need to hire some help.

The second way, placing insulation beneath the roof rafters, is best for if you plan to turn your attic into a living space. If you are ever going to finish your attic and spend time up there, you won’t want the insulation to be on the floor of the attic, because then the attic space will be very cold in the winter, since only beneath that space is insulated.

While you can install some types of insulation on your own, like blanket rolls, it may be best to hire a professional. More difficult kinds of insulation, like loose fill, require special tools and expertise to do the job right.

You don’t want to try to install insulation on your own and mess up. If you install the insulation wrong, your home still won’t be properly insulated and you won’t get the full benefit of having an insulated home. It’s important that the insulation is installed correctly and efficiently. When hiring a contractor, Spilman Inc is just the company for you!

Importance of Roof Ventilation

If you’re building a home or replacing your roof, then you need to know about ventilation. Roof ventilation is an important part of the roofing process that is often overlooked by unaware homeowners.

Proper ventilation is what keeps your home cool and what keeps ice dams from building up in the winter and damaging your roof. Ventilation is also what prevents moisture or condensation in your home from building up and ruining the wood or insulation in your attic.

Without proper attic ventilation, hot air may build up and damage or destroy the shingles or other roofing materials above. Roof vents allow hot air to escape from your attic and keeps the temperature low enough to keep from harming the above materials.

Two types of roof vents work together to properly ventilate your attic space. The two types are exhaust and intake. Exhaust vents should be installed at the ridges of your roof. These are what lets hot air escape your attic. Intake vents should be placed at the edges of your roof. These are what allow cool air into your attic space and what forces the hot air out.

You will need both intake and exhaust vents on your roof. If you install only exhaust or only intake vents, then your attic will become too hot and may damage the shingles and other materials. These two types must work together to properly ventilate and keep your attic space cool.

There are a few different choices when it comes to choosing what kind of vents you want to be installed on your roof. There are two types of roof vents, static and motorized. Basically, this just means that your roof vent can either have moving parts or not have moving parts. In most cases, either type will work well and will properly ventilate an attic. Under each of these categories are many types of vents you can choose from.

Not only does ventilation protect your roof, but it can also help lower your cooling bills. Because properly ventilated attics are not full of hot air, it stands to reason that your home below will not be so hot. This is true if the insulation in your roof is installed along the roof ridges, but not really true if your insulation is installed on the attic floor between the joists. If your insulation is on the ridges, then you may be able to save a little bit of money by having properly working roof vents.

There is a lot of math involved when installing roof vents. Vents have to be certain distances apart depending on roof type and size in order to work at full capacity and do their job. The math isn’t too complicated, but if you don’t want to deal with the hassle, then you should just hire a roofing company or contractor to do the math and install your roof vents for you. Spilman Inc has plenty of experience calculating distances and sizes of roofs and knowing where to place your vents, so you can rely on us.

A general rule is that you will need 1 sq foot of vent space for every 300 sq feet of attic floor space. Every roof is a little different, which is why doing the specific calculations may be challenging.

For the most part, roof vents take very little maintenance. Static roof vents should take almost no maintenance. There are no moving parts to break or need to be repaired, so there isn’t much to do. Just periodically checking to make sure that they are still in good shape should be enough. Motorized vents may take a little more maintenance. Motorized vents have moving parts and moving parts on anything tend to break. Motorized vents may also occasionally get clogged. You can unclog a vent by simply running a plumber’s snake down the pipe or blowing it out with an air compressor. Just check your vents every so often to make sure that they are running smoothly and don’t need any maintenance.

Once you have installed vents on your roof, you shouldn’t need to replace them for many years. Unless something unexpected happens to them, like extreme weather or damage, roof vents should last for quite a while.

If you are looking for someone to answer any questions you may have or someone to install your roof vents for you, then look no further than Spilman Inc. Spilman Inc has years of experience installing roof vents and working on other areas of the home. If you have questions about anything or want to chat with us about our services, give us a call and we would love to talk to you.

Because roof vents are so important, you should check on yours today. If yours are damaged or your roof doesn’t have any, you need to get them fixed or installed as soon as possible. You will be amazed at the difference having working roof vents on your home will make for the temperature in your home and the life expectancy of your shingles. Whatever the reason, if you’ve decided to remodel or add on to your home, Spilman Inc can help.

Remodeling or adding on to your home is a big project. Because of this, a lot of homeowners are hesitant to make the leap and begin working on their home. Spilman Inc is here to help you make that leap and get your home the way you want it as quickly as possible.

If you’re thinking of remodeling or adding on to your home, you probably have a lot of questions. Here are some of the common questions we hear when talking to potential clients about their remodel.

What does a remodel entail?

Wanting to remodel your home means that you want to change the look of it. You can choose to remodel your entire home for an entirely new look, or you can just remodel a few rooms, maybe a bathroom or a kitchen.

Remodeling may include entirely new appliances and features, new flooring, new wallpaper or paint, or any other number of improvements.

Remodels are very similar to renovations and oftentimes these two words can be used interchangeably. Technically, there is a subtle difference. Remodels aim to change the look or layout of a home or room whereas renovations aim to update and restore existing features and appliances. Whether your project leans more towards being a remodel or a renovation, Spilman Inc is the company for you.

When you trust Spilman Inc with your home’s remodel, you won’t be disappointed. Spilman has extensive experience in remodeling bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and other rooms.

Why should I get an addition?

Additions are great for anyone who doesn’t have enough room in their home. Maybe your family is growing and you don’t have enough bedrooms. Maybe you’ve started working from home and want some office space. Maybe you’re finally starting on your New Year’s resolution and want to build a gym. There are countless reasons why homeowners decide to add on to a home.

Before planning an addition, make sure that there will be enough room on your property and decide where you want your addition to go. If the only space to build on to your home is in the back, make sure that’s where you’re planning to put your addition. You’d be surprised by how many people plan an addition and then realize it won’t fit where they want it to.

Adding on to your home can be fun, but it can also be stressful. You get to design and plan a whole new space exactly how you want it, but you also have to deal with permits and contractors and money. Spilman Inc strives to make the process of adding on to your home as easy and stress-free as possible. We know the tips and tricks that will make the process go smoother, and would love to help you get through this time with as little hassle as possible.

How long will the project take?

Honestly, it depends on how big the project is. Remodeling a single bathroom will take a lot less time than remodeling your whole house or multiple rooms. A single bathroom remodel may take less than a week while a major remodeling project may take up to a month.

Building an addition on your home will take even longer. Additions start from scratch, so everything from building walls, installing insulation, extending the roof, and then designing and making the inside look great will have to be done. Again, the bigger or more complicated the addition, the longer the project will take.

If you know what you want to be done with your home and are wondering about how long it will take, feel free to give Spilman Inc a call. We can discuss your remodel or addition, answer your questions, and figure out how long your project will take. We will do anything we can to answer your questions and make you happy, so give us a call and we’ll have a chat.

How much will the project cost?

Again, this depends on how big your remodel or add on is and what types of materials, appliances, and features you plan to install.

Remodeling or adding on to your home will be expensive, but maybe not as expensive as you think. By choosing cheaper materials that will still get the job done and give you a beautiful home, you can cut costs in a lot of places.

Remodeling a bathroom will be cheaper than remodeling a kitchen, which will be cheaper than remodeling your whole house or putting in an addition. It all depends on your specific project and the materials you want to use.

To find out how much your home project will cost, call Spilman Inc and talk to a representative. We can give you an estimate and help you find ways to cut costs.

The bottom line:

The bottom line is if you plan to remodel or add on to your home, call Spilman Inc. DECKS

Your home is your pride and joy. Owning a home allows you the freedom to do whatever you want with it and to make it truly your own. A typical homeowner is always looking for ways to improve his or her home and make it into something wonderful.

A way you can improve your home is by building a deck. A deck will add to the value of your home and will help make your backyard a place you want to spend a lot of time in.

Lots of people wish they spent more time outside in their backyard. Your backyard is there for you to enjoy, but there are so many things you have to do every day that finding time to relax and sit outside listening to the birds may be last on your to-do list.

What if you had the motivation? Having a beautiful deck attached to the back of your home may be just the motivation you need to spend time outside and enjoy the fresh air of your neighborhood.

Decks are available in so many sizes, colors, and materials that it would be impossible not to find something you love. Whether you want red pine or beautiful mahogany, or anything in between, you’re bound to find the perfect deck for your home.

If you love throwing parties but don’t have enough room in your home, then building a deck is the perfect solution. Decks add much-needed space and will also give your parties a beautiful, natural atmosphere. If you don’t have enough space for parties then chances are you also don’t have enough space for other things you enjoy. Whether you want a new place to sit and read, a place to send your kids to play, a spot for some much-needed relaxation, or a place to put your barbeque, a deck will be perfect for you.

Now that you know the value and worth of a deck, let’s talk about some of the nitty-gritty stuff.

How much will a deck cost?

This question can’t be accurately answered until after you’ve made some tough choices. Once you know the materials, size, and installation prices, you can then determine the overall cost of this project. However, we can give you a ballpark number. A low-end deck may cost just over a thousand dollars while a high-end deck may cost up to ten thousand dollars. Chances are your deck will cost somewhere in between these two numbers.

This may sound like a lot of money, but remember that having a deck will add value to your home. If you ever plan to sell your house, then having a deck will make your house worth more money. When you think about it this way, you’ll probably earn back most, if not all, of the money you spent building your deck.

The price of your project is pretty controllable. If you want to spend a minimum amount of money on your deck, then you can just pick the cheapest labor and materials available. Keep in mind that this tactic probably isn’t the best idea, since the less money you spend, the more likely you are to experience problems with your deck later. When your deck has structural or image problems, you’ll have to pay to have these things repaired. If you choose the cheap route now, you may end up regretting it later.

On the other hand, if you choose to go with the most expensive materials, you’ll be spending a lot more money on your deck. Depending on how financially secure you are, this may be the route you choose. The more money you spend now, the less likely you are to experience problems in the future. This is never guaranteed, so don’t count on your expensive materials lasting forever.

Most people choose the middle route. By spending a decent amount of money on materials and labor, but cutting costs in various places, you can find a good balance between price and value. This means not choosing the most expensive, most durable materials, but also not the cheapest ones. By doing this, you can have a beautiful deck made of good materials for a decent price.

Can I build my deck on my own?

Depending on your skill level and experience, yes, you may be able to build your deck on your own. If you’ve worked as a builder before or have friends or family members who’ve done so, then building a deck may not take too much effort. However, if you don’t know what you’re doing, then you should hire a professional like Spilman Inc to build your deck for you. Building a deck will take a lot of work and a lot of precision. If you make a mistake, you may end up spending more money than your budget allows and may even end up having to start over. When you hire a professional, you can rest easy knowing that your deck and your home are in good hands and will be finished quickly, responsibly, and correctly.

PAINTING

You know it’s time to repaint your house if your paint is peeling, is really outdated, or has slowly turned a different color. If you look at your home, whether it’s outside or inside, and cringe a little when you see the condition of the paint, then it’s definitely time to have your home repainted.

You should have your home repainted when it starts to fade or peel away. You can also repaint your home if you’re sick of the color or the paint is so old that it makes your house look like a time machine.

If you live in North Carolina and your home needs repainted, call Spilman Inc. Spilman Inc has over 25 years of experience painting homes and would love to help make your home stand out.

If you want the outside of your home painted or the individual rooms inside your home painted, Spilman Inc will be able to help you. Spilman Inc takes pride in knowing that every home they paint is beautiful and well done. After working with Spilman Inc, you’ll no longer be ashamed of the state of your home, and will be proud to point out the new paint to your friends and family.

If you have the desire and the know-how, you can paint your house yourself. However, keep in mind that painting evenly and precisely can be tricky. There are lots of little tricks that can help your paint job go much smoother and look much better for years to come. Spilman Inc knows these little tricks and can easily apply them to your home. If you try painting the walls yourself, you run the risk of messing up and having to repaint some areas. Rather than taking the chance, call Spillman Inc for a guaranteed gorgeous, even paint job.

Painting is no easy matter. There are lots of things to know and tricks to apply. From choosing the paint color to purchasing enough to the final touches, Spilman Inc can help guide you through the stressful process of painting your home. You won’t have to worry about anything (except choosing the color you want) when you hire Spilman Inc.

And that brings us to color. There are so many paint colors out there that it can be extremely difficult to know which will be the best to choose. There are lots of factors that go into choosing a paint color, including personal preference, surrounding colors, and what the wall is used for. At Spilman Inc, we can help you find the perfect color that you’ll fall in love with.

If the walls you want to be painted are inside your home, then you can have a lot of fun picking colors that show your personality and reflect your tastes. Lots of people go for the more neutral, ‘safe’ colors, which is a great idea if that is what you want. Or, you can have more fun with it and choose a vibrant, beautiful hue for your walls. As long as you like it and it looks good, choose whatever color you want.

When painting the outside of your home, you’ll probably want to choose more neutral colors. Sure, you can choose vibrant pink for the outside of your house, but is that really what you want your neighbors to see every time they look at your home? Most outer colors are neutral and go well with the other homes in the neighborhood. You’ll probably make the choice to follow that trend, but if you want to go a different way, good for you.

Some areas are more difficult to paint than others. Low walls and areas close to the ground and up to head height are the easiest, simply because they’re the easiest to reach. The higher up the wall you get, the more difficult it will be to paint. By the time you get to the ceilings, you’ll be up on a ladder or using an unreliable pole, craning your neck and squinting in the hopes that you’re seeing things correctly.

Yes, ceilings are difficult to paint. The people at Spilman Inc, though, have lots of experience painting ceilings and other high places. Our team will easily be able to tackle the difficult spots and have your entire home looking good as new in no time.

If you have young kids or like changes every few years, you may end up repainting your walls a few times. A lot of kids like fun colored walls in their room with fun designs that express their interests. This is great when they’re young, but by the time they hit their teenage years, they’ve probably outgrown the princesses or dinosaurs covering their walls. At this point, you will want to repaint their rooms a more mature color that reflects their growing personality and interests. If these interests change often and you’re a parent who caters to those interests as best you can, you may end up repainting a bedroom multiple times before your kids move out. If this is the case, then hopefully someday your kids will appreciate the effort you went through, because repainting multiple times certainly isn’t easy, either on you or your budget.

Whether you need one room painted or your entire house, Spilman Inc is the company for you. With super friendly, respectful staff and lots of experience, you can’t go wrong with Spilman. We’re so sure that you’ll love our painting and our services that we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If there’s a problem, let us know and we’ll fix it as soon as possible. We won’t be happy until you’re happy.

If your paint is peeling, outdated, not its original color, or just plain boring, give Spilman Inc a call. We can give you a quote and talk about your options. We would love to chat with you and help you on the journey towards newly painted walls that give your whole home a new feel.
